The Mexican gray wolf occasionally drifts into Texas from a struggling population in Mexico.
The howl of the native gray wolf - the wolf that was here thousands of years before the first people - is gone from Texas forever.
Whether or not the wolf was revered by the Indian, they did not intend to co-exist with anything - especially wolves.
The destruction of the bison, deer, wild sheep, pronghorns and turkeys had the same effect on the wolf as it had on the Indian. It took away the wolves' main prey animals and they either turned on the settler's livestock or they starved. Either way it marked the end of the gray wolf.

About the Artist - Charles Beckendorf
Charles grew up in Mathis, Texas, where he had the opportunity to spend hours on large ranches. Generous land owners gave him permission to wander freely over their ranches and he observed creatures in their natural surroundings. He developed a lifelong love of nature, whether it be in the tiniest of flowers or the largest of animals. It was at this time that he became a true naturalist.
