The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake at right, is the largest, most widespread and statistically the most dangerous serpent in the state. Nearly all cases of snakebite treated in Texas hospitals are from this snake.
The one obvious thing that distinguishes a rattlesnake from all other snakes is the rattle. The purpose of the rattle is to warn those who might harm the snake. It will rattle if approached by a prey animal such as a mouse

About the Artist - Charles Beckendorf
Charles grew up in Mathis, Texas, where he had the opportunity to spend hours on large ranches. Generous land owners gave him permission to wander freely over their ranches and he observed creatures in their natural surroundings. He developed a lifelong love of nature, whether it be in the tiniest of flowers or the largest of animals. It was at this time that he became a true naturalist.
